“Where cupping therapy shines the brightest in the rehab setting is in the muscle recovery phase. Cupping improves blood flow to the injured muscles and helps treat trigger points due to tendon overload. When cupping is paired with the right exercises, dry needling and hands on techniques, it can be a powerful tool in helping you recover from injury. Most providers will do cupping therapy in isolation, and that’s where patients can have problems. At Peak Physiotherapy and Performance, we combine cupping therapy with other treatment techniques to help our patients get back to doing what they love as quickly as possible.”

Frequently Asked Questions About
cupping therapy in Columbus, Ohio
What is cupping therapy?
Cupping Therapy is treatment method that involves briefly attaching round inverted cups to certain parts of the body. These cups are attached using a vacuum effect. Cupping therapy uses the vacuum effect on the skin inside the cups to increase blood flow to the area, alleviate pain and decrease muscle tension. Cupping is not a new form of treatment, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and other ancient healing systems. In recent years, cupping has gained popularity among athletes to help assist with muscle recovery.
What conditions can cupping therapy help?
Peak Physiotherapy and Performance provides cupping for patients with a number of different injuries for pain relief. We use this this procedure in our maintenance/recovery programs to get rid of muscle soreness and to bring new blood to the area we are treating. We also use cupping therapy for back pain relief, neck pain relief, shoulder pain relief, elbow pain relief, and knee pain relief. Keep in mind, Cupping is always used in combination with several other treatment techniques to maximize pain relief and get you back to doing what you love as fast as possible.
Will I get circular bruises from cupping therapy?
Cupping Therapy has gained popularity in the media after people noticing the circular bruises on numerous professional athletes during the Olympics. Bruises are not necessarily harmful and are not required for pain relief to occur These bruises are often a side effect of cupping and typically fade after several days. The bruises are often caused by prolonged exposure to the vacuum effect of the cups in a static position. Bruising is minimized during practice at Peak Physiotherapy and Performance by use of a more active form of cupping, called dynamic cupping, where the cups are not placed in a static position for a prolonged period of time. Because the cups are in motion while a light vacuum effect is maintained, bruising is much less common and treatment is much more comfortable. The goal of dynamic cupping is to provide an increase in blood flow to a larger surface area of the skin rather than one small and specific spot.
How long does treatment take?
A typical cupping therapy treatment takes about 10-15 minutes, though it’s always combined with other therapeutic techniques for optimal results. We will let you know what to expect from your treatment during your initial consultation.
